The Ultimate Guide to Pickleball Footwork

Move Faster, Miss Less, and Play More Confidently

Most players think they need a better paddle or more power.

But the real secret to playing smoother, more consistent pickleball?

Your feet.

Footwork controls everything — timing, balance, resets, dinks, volleys, attacks. When your feet are late or off-balance, even the best swing can’t save you.

Here’s how to build footwork that makes your whole game feel easier.

1. Start With the Ready Stance

Your stance should make you feel like a coiled spring:

✔ feet shoulder-width apart

✔ knees bent

✔ paddle in front of you

✔ weight on the balls of your feet

If you’re standing tall, you’re already late to the ball.

2. Master the Split-Step

The split-step is a small hop you make right as your opponent hits the ball.

It helps you:

• react faster

• move more explosively

• stay balanced

• avoid getting caught flat-footed

Every high-level player does it. Every rally. Every shot.

3. Stay Low When Moving Forward

When transitioning to the kitchen:

• keep your hips low

• take small, fast steps

• do NOT stand up straight while moving

Low = stable.

Stable = clean shots.

4. Use Small Adjustment Steps

Long lunges kill your balance.

Short, quick steps let you get behind the ball early.

Think:

step-step-set… hit.

Not:

lunge… pray… swing.

5. Move With Your Partner

Imagine you and your partner are connected by a rope.

When they shift:

➡️ you shift

When they slide left:

⬅️ you slide

When they retreat:

⬇️ you retreat

This closes holes and stops opponents from attacking the middle.

6. Recover to Neutral After Every Shot

Don’t admire your shot.

After contact:

• feet back under you

• paddle in front

• ready for the next ball

Good players recover immediately.

Great players recover before the ball even lands.
